Restaurant Review: Shizen San Francisco A Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya

Posted on April 4, 2025April 4, 2025

As someone who’s been plant-based for 20 years and considers herself an exceptional plant-based cook, I rarely find restaurants that truly impress me. More often than not, I leave thinking, “I could make this better at home.” But Shizen? Oh, honey, this place is something else entirely. It’s one of those rare gems that not only meets my high standards but blows them out of the water.

Nestled in the heart of the Mission District at 14th and Valencia, Shizen is a hidden gem that you might miss if not for the line of eager patrons outside on a busy night. On my initial visit, I had to circle the block twice before finally spotting it. Now, I know exactly where to go. There are no awnings or obtuse signage, just a glass door with the number 370 and Shizen below it, and the menu hanging in the window. Once inside, you’re greeted by a cozy, intimate space with an open bar where you can watch the chefs work their magic. The vibe is chill, with lots of light wood and a friendly, attentive staff that makes you feel right at home.

My introduction to Shizen was when my son took me there for a Mother’s Day dinner. On my recent visit, I brought two friends—one fully plant-based and the other transitioning to a more plant-based diet. The menu is vegan Japanese small plates that are perfect for sharing. Think sushi tapas, but all plant-based and incredibly delicious. Between the two visits, I’ve tried several of their plates, each one is more impressive than the last.

The Second Act and Body and Soul rolls are delish, with tempura and creamy tofu combinations that are both satisfying and innovative. Despite the 90-minute table turn policy, which ensures you can’t linger for hours, the experience is so enjoyable that you won’t mind. The food is so good that your eyes are always bigger than your stomach, and it’s easy to over-order from such a fantastic menu.

Shizen is a place where vegans, vegetarians, and even meat-eaters can find something to love. It’s no wonder it made the Michelin Guide. If you’re in San Francisco and looking for a unique, delicious vegan dining experience, Shizen should be at the top of your list.
